Wayne grew up in SE Kentucky in Harlan County, the youngest of 8 children. He was an outstanding athlete in several sports and was even offered a scholarship to play baseball in college. Instead, he enlisted in the Army and married his high school sweetheart, Billie Slusher, on December 22, 1955 when they were both just 18.
After his discharge, they settled in Detroit and Wayne got a job at Chevrolet Gear & Axle plant. Managers quickly recognized his leadership skills and he was promoted to a General Foreman and worked at the plant for 30 years, retiring at age 54. Wayne was the type of boss that workers respected and enjoyed working for. Lots of relatives and friends of friends found a path to a good job at GM through Wayne.
Fair, kind, and hardworking describe him best. When he retired at 54, he was still in good health, so he started doing handyman jobs. Just by word of mouth he kept busy for the next 20 years. He loved to paint and he always had a couple of buckets of his special color mix, “Navajo White”. He did good work, at very fair prices, and treated everyone with respect.
Family meant everything to Wayne. He was a loving husband, father, Papaw and “great” Papaw. He was loved and adored by his family. He took great pleasure in spending time with his great grandchildren. He used his many talents as an all around handyman to help his kids and grandkids. Later in life, he enjoyed cooking and loved to share his famous beef stew with family.
Over the years, he was always a leader in his church. He didn’t speak a lot about his faith, but it came through in how he treated people and in everything he did. He volunteered in a soup kitchen, delivered “meals on wheels”, blew all his neighbor’s snow and did many other things for others without seeking recognition.
A good and full life lived and a good example to those around him on how to treat people, be loyal to those around you, and give graciously expecting nothing in return.
A special thank you to the ICU staff of Beaumont Hospital Dearborn for the wonderful care they gave Wayne.
