Velma Marie Hill died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the age of 89 in the Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. Velma was born on August 21, 1922 in Moberly, Missouri. Her sister, Irene McClure preceded her in death in Montgomery City, Missouri in 2008. Velma is survived by her husband George Paul Hill, a daughter, Paula Ann Smith of St Charles, Missouri, a son John Michael Hill (Susan Hill) of Allen Park, Michigan. Grandchildren Bradley, Benjamin and Stephanie Smith live in Missouri; Jessica Hill lives in Michigan, and Jennifer (Nate) Soule-Hill and a great-grandson, Desi Soule-Hill live in Colorado.
Velma attended Moberly Junior College and the University of Missouri and taught 1st grade in Huntsville, Missouri, and Kindergarten in Montpelier, Ohio. She married George Paul Hill on April 5, 1944, with Paul beginning active service on April 10, 1944, thereafter serving in the Railroad Battalion in France and Germany. Paul and Velma moved to Allen Park in 1970. Throughout their married life they lived in Moberly, Missouri (twice), Montpelier, Ohio (twice), Peru, Indiana, Ferguson, Missouri (twice) and Allen Park, Michigan, during Paul's 48-year career with the Wabash/Norfolk and Western/Norfolk and Southern Railroads. They recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary after moving to The Bellaire Senior Living Residence in Riverview, Michigan.
Velma worked for Wanzer Brunelle and Dave Swinehart for eleven years in the Allen Park Presbyterian Church office and was an Elder, a member of Miriam Circle, Legacy Committee, Memorial Committee, Presbyterian Women, and other committees of the church. She had a great love of reading, but her beloved grandchildren were her pride and joy throughout her life.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, April 27, 2012, at 11:00 am at the Allen Park Presbyterian Church (visiting at 10 am) followed by a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. She will be laid to rest in the Allen Park Presbyterian Church Columbarium.
