Tom was born in a small coal mining town - Clymer, Pennsylvania- where everyone had large families. He was the youngest of 14 children. His family didn't have much, all the kids shared one bike, but he said it was a great childhood, even better than kids today.

Tom moved to Detroit with a fellow college mate who heard there were teaching jobs available. He worked at Lincoln Park schools for 42 years. He started at Huff Junior High. When that was closed, he moved to Lincoln Park High School. He was an academic counselor and taught math.

He coached middle school baseball and football. He was tough, but fair. He let every person start at least one game per season, and tried to get every player in to every game when possible. On Friday nights, he could be found in the stands for the LPHS football games rooting for his previous players.

He taught countless teens how to drive during the summer. He would help out with sets for the school plays.

He met his wife at a wedding. They had three daughters.

Tom rarely sat down. He would come home after a long day and read the paper, catch some of the news, and if there was yard work to be done, he was outside. He grew a vegetable garden, which he passed his knowledge of onto his kids. He had a camping site that he loved to spend time at.

He retired once his first grandchild Cait was born, giving midnight feedings and changing diapers. Then came along Jacob and he had 2 kids to educate and play sports with. He pushed them every bit as hard as he had pushed his own 3 children, but out of tough love, wanting them to succeed and meet their highest potential. He rarely missed a home or away game.

Tom was surrounded by his family on his last day.
