John Newell was born in Redford, MI on September 2, 1931. He was raised in Detroit and attended Ste. Anne’s High School. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Detroit, he earned his doctorate at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and began his 57-year service in medicine. During this time, he was on staff at Detroit Osteopathic, Outer Drive and Riverside Hospitals and served as Chief of Family Medicine at Heritage Hospital. He cared for anyone in need, at any hour or location, but primarily at his practice on the corner of Ecorse and Monroe in Taylor, MI. After leaving his active practice at the age of 70, he volunteered at the Cabrini Clinic in Detroit before finally retiring from medicine in 2014.
John was a true family man building a loving home with his wife, Nancy. He was devoted to her and relished in the joys of raising their six children. He was always happy to have a full house, entertaining his large extended family of Newells and Murrays, friends and strangers alike. When the grandchildren arrived, he doted on them and often told stories of the jobs of his younger days: setting bowling pins, polishing fender trim at Ford’s, and delivering mail on tugs boats. His love for cars was legendary, from the junk yard treasures he pieced together for street racing, to the stunning new convertibles he would pick up Nancy in when courting.
Proud of his Irish heritage and humble in his Catholic faith, he was an avid supporter of the Irish Pallottine Fathers in Wyandotte. He was a life-long member of the Gaelic League/Irish-American Club, the Knights of Columbus and team doctor for the Detroit Wolfetone and St. Anne’s Gaelic football Clubs. As a parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini for 57 years, he and Nancy raised their family in this faith community. He valued the Catholic education he, his children and grandchildren received and was ever grateful to the religious sisters and clergy who devoted their lives to sharing the faith.
John was the son of the late Anna and Francis Newell and is survived by his sister, Rita Bagdon. He joins his other siblings and in-laws who have predeceased him in death: Francis and Patricia Newell, Kathleen and William Everett, Maureen and Terence Johnston, Edward Bagdon and Patrick and Gloria Newell.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy and their children: Christopher (Deborah), Brendan (Johanne), Devin (Jennifer), Seán (Jenny), Maura (Edward) O’Connell, and Eileen, along with 16 grandchildren: Hannah, Kieran, Ryan, Caithleann, Patrick, Ailish, Thomas, Conor, Margaret, Aoife, Niamh, Sheelagh, Maeve, Deirdre, Declan and Seachnall.
