Joan Goode

November 2, 1928 — April 23, 2022

Joan Bernice Goode of Allen Park, MI peacefully passed from this life to her heavenly home on April 23, 2022 surrounded by her children.  Joan was born 11/2/1928 in Detroit, MI and lived in Dearborn, MI for 7 years before moving to Traverse City, MI for the next 23 years. She attended Central Michigan University and Davenport College, moved to Highland Park, MI and became a secretary in the controller’s office at Ford Motor Company. While living at the YWCA, she met our dad, Norman who lived across the street at the YMCA.  They were friends for a while going out in a big group setting but didn’t date because she told a friend, “He’s not my type”.  She finally agreed to the first date and the rest is history. They married in 1957 and purchased a home in Allen Park, MI where they became members of Allen Park Presbyterian Church two weeks before the first service was held in the new building (the largest of the two).  Norm and Joan were lovingly devoted to each other for 49 years, perfectly suited for each other. He was very social and she was reserved.  They complimented each other well.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband Norman.  She is survived by her three loving children Carolyn (Doug) Burnham, David Goode and Stephen (Ellen) Goode; her beloved grandchildren Andrew (Jaime) and Chris (Danielle) Burnham, Chelsea, Luke and Patrick Goode along with her beloved great-grandchildren Landon, Malakai, Paxton, Kenslee and Grayson along with her sister Donna Gee.

Both Joan and Norm were active members of APPC. Joan was most known for her beautiful soprano voice in the choir and singing solos. She was also active in women’s circles, couple’s club, was an elder, deacon and later in life worked in the church office.  Along with church, Joan supported her children by being involved in the PTA and came to all the games, choir concerts and scout activities that we were involved in.  She walked, biked, gardened, cooked, and kept dinners warm when activities ran late, all before microwaves were a thing. Served her family well.  She had a strong Christian faith that was reflected in how she lived her life.

To her family she was the most loving and unselfish mother, wife and grandma any of us could ask for. Her family meant EVERYTHING to her. We all adored her. She constantly told others how blessed she was, how wonderful her family was, but we were the ones who were blessed. Her positive attitude and loving, thankful spirit were hallmarks of her personality. She went through life’s challenges with grace and fortitude that modeled what we desire to put into practice in our own lives. She loved so well and was so well loved.
