Jerry M. Evanovich

Jan 21, 1957 — Sep 10, 2026

Jerry Michael Evanovich, age 69, of Melvindale, Michigan, passed away on September 10, 2026. He was born January 21, 1957, in Burgaw, North Carolina, to the late Joseph Sr. and Helen Erdei Evanovich.

Jerry grew up in Southwest Detroit and graduated from Southwestern High School in 1975, where he distinguished himself academically as salutatorian of his class. Following high school, Jerry was given the opportunity to attend Andrews University on scholarship. He ultimately chose a different path, returning home to Detroit and remaining close to the family that meant so much to him.

Family was at the center of Jerry's life, particularly his relationship with his parents. He chose to make his home with them throughout their lives, and as they grew older and their health declined, Jerry devoted much of his time to caring for them. Those years together held a particularly special place in Jerry's life. As a young man, he also worked as a nurse's aide, where his natural compassion and desire to care for others were evident in his work.

Jerry never measured generosity by how much a person had to give. Though he lived simply himself, he was remarkably generous with what he had. He was known to give his last dollar to someone he thought needed it more. When asked why, his answer was characteristically simple: "They need it more than me."

After the deaths of his parents, Jerry made his home at Coogan Terrace in Melvindale, Michigan, where he lived for more than 20 years and became a familiar and friendly presence in the community. Jerry had a way of remembering people. He knew people by name, offered rides to those who needed transportation, and was always willing to lend a hand. His kindness wasn't limited to family or close friends; helping people was simply part of his nature.

It was also at Coogan Terrace that Jerry met Patricia "Patty" Lackey. For more than 20 years, Jerry and Patty were an important part of one another's lives, sharing a close and loving relationship filled with affection and companionship. When declining health eventually required Patty to move to a nursing facility, Jerry continued to visit her faithfully. Her passing on December 24, 2025, was a profound loss for him.

Those who knew Jerry will remember his infectious, boisterous laugh, a laugh his family says could have filled an arena full of Detroit Red Wings fans. The Red Wings were Jerry's favorite team, a fact that was hard to miss when visiting his apartment, where Red Wings rugs and banners were proudly displayed.

As health challenges eventually entered Jerry's own life, he faced them with courage and determination. Through it all, the qualities that defined him remained: his generosity, his compassion, his devotion to family, and his willingness to help someone else whenever he could.

Jerry was the dear brother of Louie (June), Roy (Rebecca), Nick (Beth), and Helen (Richard) Drapiza, and the late Joseph Jr. (Jane) and Steven. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews and a beloved cousin, neighbor, and friend to many more.

Jerry will be deeply missed by his family and by the many people whose lives were made a little easier, happier, or simply less lonely because he was part of them.

Cremation will take place, and services will be held privately for close family.
