Gertrude (Trudy) Basso was born in Germany on February 10, 1924 and passed away at the age of 99 on February 1, 2024. She was the daughter of Berta Schlicht and Gustav Bluemke. She was one of five siblings Ernst, Manfred, Rudi and Renate and aunt to numerous nieces and nephews in both Italy and Germany.
Trudy and John were married in Germany on June 30, 1953 and they were married for 56 years before John passed away in 2009. In their early years in Germany, John asked Trudy to move to Australia with him but she said that was too far away from their European families so they compromised and boarded a ship to Quebec to start their new life in the United States. They lived in Windsor, Ontario for 2 years awaiting their US citizenship to come through. The couple purchased their Allen Park home in 1958 and in 1961 their daughter Christina was born. Rev. Carl Groh officiated a second marriage ceremony in 1965 at St. Frances Cabrini according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church.
Although Trudy never learned how to drive, she worked tirelessly as a teacher’s aide for the Allen Park Public School until her retirement. Trudy was an affectionate and inspiring woman who was devoted to her faith, family, and friends. Her passions included baking, traveling, and gardening. Trudy was one of the special people in our lives who never leave us, even after they are gone.
