Gerald Glenn Doughty

December 13, 1927 — June 12, 2020

Gerald Glenn Doughty was born in December 1927 in Lincoln Park to Glenn and Lucille Doughty. He was the youngest of 4 boys. The family moved to Allen Park and Jerry graduated from Melvindale HS in 1950. He enlisted in the Marine Corp at the end of WWII and served in the army during the Korean War. While still in service, he attended his cousin’s wedding and was asked to dance by a young lady, Barbara Ann Galer, who would become his wife. They had 3 children and 7 grandchildren. Barbara and Jerry were married for nearly 66 years.

Jerry graduated from EMU with a teaching degree, and Wayne State with a masters in Education. He worked for over 30 years in Detroit Public Schools, where he taught middle school math and was an administrator. Jerry was a hard worker and almost always had a second job teaching night school, drivers ed, and security at the Detroit News. After retiring, Barb and Jerry traveled the country and Canada with a travel trailer before settling in Mesa AZ as snowbirds for the next 24 winters. Everyday was a day at camp and every night filled with dances, dinners, and games. They enjoyed their life immensely.

Jerry was the consummate DIY guy. Between him and his dad, it was fixed or built. He was a lifelong member of Allen Park Presbyterian church. He grew tomatoes that tasted of summer in Michigan. He could make perfect pancakes and could do math problems in his head. He encouraged his kids but didn’t push them. Jerry rescued his daughters with car problems in the middle of the night on more than one occasion, always without complaint or lectures. He had the patience of saints.

Now he joins his bride, his parents and brothers, his son-in-law, and his buddy Ray. He was a kind man and will be missed by many.

Cremation has taken place. Inurnment Allen Park Presbyterian Church.
