Chuck was born in Malta as Carmelo Tommaso and lived there through World War II. As a boy in Malta, he attended grade school, helped his Dad collect fares on the bus his dad owned and also helped him tend to the family’s animals. In 1949 his parents and 8 of their 9 children at the time immigrated to the United States and lived in Detroit’s Corktown, walking distance from Briggs Stadium, where he frequented Detroit Tiger Baseball games. When Chuck was a teenager he delivered newspapers for the Detroit Times and received many awards and trips for outstanding work. Chuck then went to work for Cunningham’s Drugs in Detroit and worked in their warehouse as a hi-lo driver. Next he transitioned to his career job at Michigan Bell which eventually became AT&T. Because of the breakup of the “Baby Bells” Chuck took a buyout and “retired”. During his retirement Chuck enjoyed Golfing with his St. Hugh church league and with friends. He most enjoyed the family get-togethers at his home in Allen Park, where for years the family gathered on weekends and holidays. Chuck (Nannu) loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, hanging out with them in the backyard, attending dance recitals, soccer and baseball games, swim meets and bowling leagues. During retirement, he worked part-time as a hired handyman refurbishing commercial buildings utilizing his many plumbing, electrical and carpentry skills. He also enjoyed helping family and friends with odd jobs, always willing to come and help anyone with any task. Also in retirement, he worked for Nationwide Tax Services preparing taxes during tax season, and studied the tax laws to always be up to date. He even brought that job home preparing taxes for many family members. Even in his final months with dementia, he was still reading tax paperwork “just for fun”! Chuck with his wife Angela was a devout catholic, serving as an usher for many years, and also doing repair work at the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed volunteering with their fundraising dinners. Throughout his life, Chuck was an avid sports enthusiast. In his early years he played softball and hockey, transitioned to bowling and golf in his later years, and remained a TV sports fan (and commentator) until his final days. Chuck was surrounded by 24 family members (a possible hospital record) during his brief stay and passed peacefully in his sleep. Chuck (Charlie, Honey, Dad, Nannu, Buznannu) will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
